Common Interest #1: Manchester | Koto & Mr Bingo

The design industry is built on shared passions. Whether it’s branding, storytelling, future trends, AI, leadership, or creative culture, we’re all navigating the same conversations.

That’s why we created Common Interest: an event series bringing together the creative community for fresh takes, inspirational talks, and a chance to hear directly from the industry’s most interesting minds.

We kicked things off in Manchester, and here’s what went down.

Our speakers

Dan Witchell – Executive Creative Director, Koto

Koto is a global studio of optimists, building brands and digital experiences for some of the most impactful companies out there. Their client list reads like a creative’s dream… Netflix, Spotify, Nike, and Coca-Cola, alongside challenger brands and ambitious start-ups pushing boundaries.

Dan joined us to share his insights on design leadership, branding in motion, and what it takes to build a brand that actually sticks. But the overarching theme was of optimism, and how we harness the power of positive thinking in creative problem solving.

What does that mean, visually? Dan shared his passion for kawaii; a Japanese term for ‘cute’ or ‘adorable’. It’s also a cultural style that emphasises charm, simplicity, and childlike innocence. When you notice it, you’ll see it everywhere!

Mr Bingo – Artist, Speaker & Twat (his words, not ours)

Mr Bingo spent 15 years working with The New Yorker, The Guardian, TIME, The Mighty Boosh, and The New York Times before deciding he’d had enough of clients. Instead, he turned his energy to art, creative anarchy, and running one of the most entertaining Kickstarter campaigns of all time.

His talk covered everything from building an audience to making work that genuinely excites you — without compromise. Also, Wetherspoons may have been mentioned. He concluded the evening by signing a bald man’s head. Tattoo incoming.

The venue: a Manchester icon

We knew we needed a venue with character, history, and pints, so Band On The Wall was the perfect fit. A cornerstone of Manchester’s music and culture scene since 1803, it’s hosted everyone from Buzzcocks to Joy Division, making it an inspiring setting for a night of creative chat.

There’s more to come

This was just the beginning. We’re bringing Common Interest to more people, with more speakers, more topics, and even more creative connections. Stay tuned.
